Song of the Day: Guster – “Hard Times” and “Don’t Go”

Posted by Greg on Aug 7, 2018 in Music |

We’re taking a creative liberty and nominating two tracks for today’s Song of the Day. New England quartet Guster is hard at work on their eighth album and have a fall tour already planned out (see below for tour dates). In an effort to stoke the fires of their rabid fan base they’ve released two songs off the as-yet untitled new album. Though it’s a far departure from the band’s earlier work it falls very much in line with the pattern the band has found themselves in over the last 2-3 albums.

There’s more synths and more electronics but the warm, soothing vocals and the luxuriant layers are as apparent as ever before. Quite simply this band knows how to write damn good songs. Look no furher than the enveloping and ebullient “Hard Times,” which is as equally stirring as the plaintive and near-perfect “Don’t Go.” The former is more lush and pastoral evoking something along the lines of As Tall as Lions, while the bubbly and buzzy “Don’t Go” is both quintessential Guster while also being fresh, current and energetic, a la
fellow New Englanders Passion Pit.

Most importantly “Don’t Go” and “Hard Times” just might be two of the best songs the band has written to date. Here’s hoping the band adds a Florida date soon. We sure would love to see them again!
