Song of the Day: Lemonade by Rubblebucket

Whoops, September began and we got quiet. Rest assured, it’s not for lack of desire. Alas, life has been a whirlwind these past couple weeks, but we’re back on track and ready to dive in.

We’ve long been fans of Brooklyn’s quirky funk-jam-pop outfit Rubblebucket, mostly because of their dynamic live show, but also because so many of their songs are downright magnetic. The band’s latest album Sun Machine is out now and just might be their best album to date.

Of the many gems on Sun Machine, few stand out quite like “Lemonade.” Opening with sultry horns the song segues quickly into a groove that is hypnotic, intoxicating and utterly smooth. Though she’s had her share of winning moments, vocalist Kalmia Traver has never sounded better than she does on “Lemonade.” Not only that the band sounds as polished, layered and affecting as they ever have.

The strength of Sun Machine is due largely from the hurdles the band has faced in the last half-dozen years. Vocalist Traver and Alex Toth (trumpet, band leader) recently split after a three-year attempt at maintaining an open relationship. While the breakup did inspire much of the album, Kalmia was also diagnosed with ovarian cancer in 2013 and Alex recently found sobriety after a lengthy battle with alcoholism. As a result of these seminal events, Sun Basket has emerged, and hot damn, it is something.

The band heads out on a fall tour beginning Oct. 25 in Fairfield, CT. For a look at the remainder of the tour dates, see below. And if they’re coming to your town, do not miss the chance to see them live. You will not be disappointed.
