Song of the Day: Mark Erelli – “By Degrees”

Anyone who has read this blog for a few years now should know how fondly we think of Boston singer-songwriter Mark Erelli. The man has a voice unlike few others and is arguably one of the most accomplished musicians in the country. Don’t believe us? Ask Josh Ritter.

Erelli has always worn his politics on his sleeve and some of his best songs to date (”The Only Way,” “Seeds of Peace,” “Volunteers,” “Hope Dies Last”) have been politically charged anthems that have consistently stayed criminally under-the-radar. Each of them are songs that are unparalleled in their effectiveness. Timeless, poignant, polished. Anchored in hope, resolve, peace and freedom. All of them serving as beacons for a brighter future.

Earlier today Erelli released one of his most important songs to date, the anti-gun violence ballad “By Degrees.” The song features vocals from the likes of Ritter, Rosanne Cash, Sheryl Crow, Lori McKenna and Anais Mitchell. If that’s not enough to stoke your interest, consider this: all proceeds from the single benefit Giffords: Courage to Fight Gun Violence.

Even though this country remains fractured, frayed and bewildered, one thing is for certain: there is hope and his name is Mark Erelli.
