The End of an Era: So Long, WPLJ!

Posted by Greg on May 8, 2019 in Music, NYC |

Thanks to a tip from a friend we just got word that Long Island’s veritable Top 40 staple WPLJ is saying goodbye.

Cumulus Media has sold the station to the Educational Media Foundation, the parent company of popular Christian rock station K-Love. Quite frankly, it’s hard to describe the impact WPLJ has had on our listening habits. Growing up on Long Island, SITH founder and lead editor Greg Robson, spent much of his time listening to WPLJ and acquiring a taste for Top 40 music. Some of our favorite artists have played on-air and been a part of WPLJ’s many concerts. The WPLJ radio station, which has been broadcasting since 1971, announced that it would shut down effective May 31st.

While it’s no surprise that terrestrial radio stations continue to struggle, it doesn’t make this news any less bittersweet. To the fine folks at WPLJ from the 1980s to today, we here at SITH, humbly say thank you!
