Alicia Enstrom

It is always humbling to be the first to premiere something and so it is that we announce the arrival of a bona fide talent we are most eager to keep our eye on: Alicia Enstrom.

Never heard of her, huh? That’s probably because she is most known for her stints with the Nashville String Machine, Nashville Music Scoring and Nashville Recording Orchestra. She also spent nearly 10 years as a solo violinist for Cirque de Soleil and was lead violin, pianist and dancer with the international violin show Barrage. To date, Enstrom has work on projects with the likes of Paul McCartney, Alison Krauss, Willie Nelson, Call of Duty (yep, believe it) and Spiderman. She also performs with the Nashville Symphony and a handful of jazz and classical outfits.

Enstrom’s video for new single “Half Moon” is a delicate composition that expertly balances classical influences while incorporating more electric and synthetic elements. The easy comparison is Lindsay Stirling, but quite frankly, this blows Stirling’s work out of the water. Enstrom’s foray into electronic-based music is not out of left-field. She is one half of the electronic duo Are We Sane? “Half Moon” is off of Enstrom’s new EP A Monstrosity, due out later this year.

On the whole “Half Moon” is dizzy, jarring and borderline ethereal. Part of it actually feels Middle Eastern and the other half feels like something Bjork might have worked on. And the video, well, as with almost every Alicia Enstrom video, it is worth watching for its high attention to detail and motif. No, “Half Moon” is not overtly commercial but it is inventive, inviting and deeply provocative. Heck it just made its way into our summer dance playlist. You should add it to yours as well. Seriously, how can you not?
