Song of the Week: Lowen – “Morning, Mourning”

Posted by Greg on Sep 4, 2019 in Music |

The last time we heard from Emily Kopp she was saying farewell to Orlando and embracing a new love. That new love is now her wife and Kopp, now performing under the moniker Lowen, resides in Nashville.

She didn’t exactly stay quiet though. In 2017, she released the song “Hold Your Head Up” and it premiered on HuffPost. Her long-term songwriting partnership with Orlando guitarist/producer Justin Beckler Midnight Riot continues to flourish and her songwriting has grown leaps and bound since her primitive days in the Sunshine States. In fact, she’s in an entirely different stratosphere these days. One that deserves magazine covers, headlining bills and award nominations.

“Morning, Mourning” is her debut single and holy wow is it good. Melding blues, soul and DIY grit, “Morning, Mourning” is dynamic, intimate and undeniably soulful. Drawing comparisons to the likes of Amy Winehouse and Lauren Daigle, Lowen is an artist that absolutely demands larger stages. When Kopp started her career, she was channeling blue-eyed soul in an acoustic coffeehouse vibe. Over time, she ditched the acoustic and found a newfound love with an electric guitar. Since she has made the switch her songs have become deeper, wholly powerful and utterly intoxicating.

The song was written as a valentine to her wife but took on new morning when the “he” that is referenced in the song passed away in a motorcycle accident in 2018. Whether “Morning, Mourning” gains any traction remains to be seen, but for now it just might be the best song we’ve heard all week. Here’s to the road ahead for one of Nashville’s best kept secrets. With songs like this in her back pocket, she won’t be a secret for long.
