NewSong Music has announced the finalists for its 18th annual NewSong Music Competition Finals on November 23 at Isis Music Hall in Asheville, NC. Previous winners include Mel Bryant and Crys Matthews.

This year’s two finalists are:

Jobi Riccio, a Boston-based singer-songwriter inspired by the likes of Buck Owens and Joni Mitchell. Her debut EP Strawberry Wine is an ode to Emmylou Harris, Lucinda Williams, Dolly Parton, Patty Griffin and Kacey Musgraves.

Grant Maloy Smith, a Rhode Island-based singer-songwriter who melds bluegrass, country and folk into one addicting cocktail. He’s performed at Carnegie Hall, served as inspiration for an award-winning children’s book and is an actor. His upcoming film Oildale premieres in Los Angeles on Dec. 12. His song “Man of Steel” was selected as the official theme song of the National Veterans Foundation.

NewSong Music is an independent artist development organization and independent record label founded by producer and musician Gar Ragland. A native of Winston-Salem, NC, Ragland began his music career as an undergraduate student at the University of Virginia, sharing bills with acts that include the Dave Matthews Band, Gov’t Mule and the Aquarium Rescue Unit.

In 2005 Ragland moved to New York City, working out of his recording studio in Gowanus, Brooklyn. In 2012, he relocated with his wife and three children to Asheville to take up residence at Echo Mountain Recording Studios. Ragland is a voting member of the Recording Academy (Grammys), and currently serves as the board chair of the Asheville Area Arts Council.
