Esther Rose

Welps, here we are. Three weeks since a foot of my colon was removed, and a few days away from starting chemotherapy. Not to mention COVID-19 craziness. So yeah, things have been a bit too quiet around here. That’s going to change though.

We recently stumbled across this fantastic version of Sheryl Crow’s 1996 classic “My Favorite Mistake” by New Orleans chanteuse Esther Rose, and hot damn, do we love it. Restrained, sparse and expertly crafted, it is a calming salve to these turbulent times.

Rose is scheduled to tour in support of Pokey LaFarge this summer and that’s enough for us to get behind her work. But that’s not all. She also appears on our favorite indie record label: Father/Daughter Records. If you’re not familiar with the label, take the time to dive into their catalog and their story. Jessi Frick (née Hector) is one of our favorite people on this planet and while we’ve never met her father, any dad that can partner with his daughter to bring first-rate indie releases to the masses. Yeah, that’s the kind of person we want to support.

Okay, enough about the label. The song itself was recorded live to tape at Tigermen Den in New Orleans. In regards to the song, Rose says the following. “My band and I had a lot of fun coming up with our own arrangement; Dan Cutler is playing that iconic guitar riff on upright bass, we slowed down the tempo, and I changed a couple words to make it a little more hopeful.”
