Two Valentine’s Day Songs Worth Your Time

We won’t deny it, we’re romantics at heart. Maybe that’s the chemistry of a journalist and a violinist tying the knot and doing life together or maybe it’s just we’re wired that way. The most likely reason though might just be that Feb. 13 is our wedding anniversary. Either way that movie gets watched in some capacity every year and will remain a staple of the SITH household. And yes we know it’s one of the worst movies released that year (if not ever) but Feb. 13 and 14 will forever be linked to our marriage, so yeah, there’s that. All this to say, we’re unabashed saps about Valentine’s Day and the “holiday” always has us jonesing for new love songs to add to an ever-growing playlist.. This year we’ve found two that do just the trick.

Failure of Imagination” by Practice is a dreamy and hooky ear worm that is luminescent, lingering and lovelorn. Heck if this song doesn’t scream Valentine’s Day we don’t know what does. Practice is the moniker of NYC-based indie-pop singer-songwriter Michael Tapper (formerly of We Are Scientists, Bishop Allen and Yellow Ostrich, among others) whose debut solo album Not a Game will be released next weekend. This was a song that was not on our radar until today and hot damn are we glad we found it. Languid, alluring and deeply felt it is a gorgeous ode to a spouse and has already been added to a Valentine’s Day playlist.

Similarly “Ariana” by the Neverlutionaries is a big-hearted valentine anchored by sterling production and sturdy vocals. The band is the nom-de-plume of Nashville-based psych-alt songwriter Christopher Harold Wells. “Ariana” is one of two lead singles from his debut self-titled LP due out this weekend on Polychromatic Records. While the video is undeniably corny and the lyrics maybe a bit too saccharine we’re throwing it on our Valentine’s Day 2021 playlist for sure. Buttery, buoyant and breathtaking it just might be one of the best songs we’ve heard this week.

As you consider your Valentine’s Day plans for 2021, we’re pretty certain these two songs darn well better be involved.
