EDITOR’S NOTE: Spoilers ahead.

As we continue gushing about SXSW (trust us, you’ll be hearing about SXSW for weeks from us), we want to shed light on a short film that floored us. Learning Tagalog With Kayla begins exactly as it sounds.

Writer/director/editor/cinematographer/colorist and lead actress Kayla Abuda Galang begins with rudimentary phrases in Tagalog. A few seconds later though the lesson takes a dark and sour turn. Unraveling quarantine in the time of COVID Learning Tagalog with Kayla mines the depths of mental health, boredom and a need for connection. In just four quick minutes Abuda Galang does more and says more than most films will in 90 minutes (see our review of Boogie for proof). The film recently won the SXSW 2021 Audience Award for Best Texas Short. While distribution remains unknown at this point, we’re signaling now that Galang is an artist and filmmaker to watch in the months ahead. The film has already received positive press from the likes of Film Threat and The Austin Chronicle But with this world premiere now in the books the sky is most certainly the limit for Abuda Galang. We can’t wait to see what she does next.
