Did Kacey Musgraves Just Jump the Shark?

Posted by Greg on Aug 23, 2021 in Music |

I was having a pretty good Monday until this piece of superfluous self-aggrandizement jumped across my screen.

Apparently Kacey Musgraves is releasing a new album Star-Crossed on Sept. 10 and with it comes a film co-produced by Interscope Films, Anonymous Content, MCA Nashville (her record label) and Paramount +.

I’ve seen this movie before. Earlier this year Demi Lovato shared her “story” in a hollow and unappealing piece of propaganda that somehow counted as a documentary in SXSW’s eyes. And two decades ago Garth Brooks thought it would be great to drum up the Chris Gaines project. At what point can we just let the music speak for itself? Listen I’m a film snob if there ever was one so if this ends up being something worth championing I’ll gladly bite my own tongue. But if this is just a contrived attempt at art and staying in the conversation then consider me unimpressed. She already has an armful of Grammys and CMAs to her name, why offer up this piece of unneeded junk.

Listen I’m no Kacey hater. She hasn’t delivered a crummy album yet. But this whole idea seems convoluted and very much like a TV show jumping the shark. I’ll gladly be wrong about this. But for now. I’ll go listen to some Carly Pearce or Tenille Arts thank you very much.
