Band of the Week: Rowan

Posted by Greg on Oct 20, 2021 in Music |

As much as we all love American-made music there is no denying that artists and bands east of the Atlantic just do music better. Whether its The Beatles, the Rolling Stones, Queen, U2 or Coldplay, the list of Irish and British bands and artists is pages long. Heck, we could add Elton John, Oasis and Ed Sheeran to that list and not even be scratching the surface.

From that rich tradition comes the Cork-based trio Rowan and their latest single “Youth and Youthhood.” Woozy, hypnotic and sweetly affecting the single is cheery and bright. Set against the backdrop of meandering guitars and an airy, almost bubbling rhythm section “Youth and Youthhood” is a vernal exploration into adolescence and all the confusion that comes with. In short, the song is as hook-heavy and ebullient as anything I’ve heard in at least a couple months,

Heck I’ll just come right out and say it: Rowan might just be Ireland’s next big buzz band. The single comes on the heels of the trio’s recently released EP Everybody Talks a near-perfect collection of six definitive earworms. Highlighted by Dylan Howe’s sturdy timbre Rowan checks all the boxes and still leaves you wanting more. A new album is forthcoming and the band does plan to tour to close out 2021. Signed to upstart Los Angeles imprint Beverly Martel the Irish trio have a future in both Ireland and beyond.

We haven’t been this floored since we first heard Inhaler earlier this year. Do yourself a favor and get in on the Rowan action now. Chances are they’ll be headlining the Hollywood Bowl to close out 2022. Yes, they’re that good. Score another one for Ireland.
