David Archuleta Shines on Orion EP

In the ever-widening cadre of American Idol contestants, few shone as bright as Utah’s David Archuleta. Nearly a decade removed from his runner-up appearance in the 2008 season, Archuleta is quietly staying under the radar, releasing quality albums that few are paying attention to. His latest release, Orion, might very well turn that tide.

Now living in Nashville, Archuleta seems to have tapped into something potent, powerful and deeply impacting with this latest set. Lead single “Up All Night” finds his tenor vocals as confident as ever and the dance-pop landscape radio-ready, propulsive and primed for summer playlists. The track is undeniably commercial and moves similarly to the canon of Enrique Iglesias. Though the single will probably land him in the Radio Disney crowd, that’s not exactly a departure from his core fan base during the Idol years.

The more mature of the set is the contemplative “Numb,” a co-write with in-demand songwriters Trent Dabbs and Jamie Kennedy that has a depth and weightiness that soars past “Up All Night” and points to something both promising and influential. Archuleta has always been easy to root for and one can only hope that “Up All Night” and the newly released Orion EP can push him back towards the spotlight.

Archuleta recently kicked off a tour in California and will tour through the summer, with more dates being added daily. More dates can be found at his website.
