Artist of the Day: River Matthews

The unexpected ones are always those that deliver the biggest punch. So it was that the EP Sunshine by Britain’s River Matthews came across the SITH inbox this morning. Sure glad it did. Matthews is a former music therapist who has recently dabbled into commercial music. For this the music world should be thankful. Recently featured on BBC’s Radio 2 as Jo Whiley’s New Favourite Thing, he has also supported Rag n’ Bone Man on his fall UK tour.

Sunshine (Caroline Records) is arguably one of the best EPs released this year and the absolute start of a promising career. The EP opens with the title track, a buoyant and bright slice of horn-drenched radio pop that’s as engaging and confident as anything released this year. The EP segues into introspective balladry on the timeless “Undo Ordinary,” a meandering and placid effort that seems destined for Sirius XM’s The Coffeehouse and beyond. The mid-tempo introspection continues on the meandering and memorable “Light the Way,” a yearning, big-hearted paean to confidence. The EP closes with a stunning and near-perfect cover of Roxette’s ubiquitous 80’s ballad “It Must Have Been Love.”

Equal parts Martin Sexton, Passenger and James Blunt, Matthews is an absolute delight. Whether he makes a dent stateside remains to be seen, but more albums like this and the American public would be foolish to pass this guy up. Holy wow, he is something. Head over to Spotify to hear for yourself. You will not be disappointed.
