Of all the numerous Record Store Day releases coming out this year, the one we’re most excited about is Belly. Yep, “Feed the Tree,” that Belly. Sure enough they’re back. After going on a reunion tour in 2016, they’ve been hard at work on album number three. Said album, Dove, is their first in 23 years (yep, two-plus decades). Now that’s one heck of a layoff.

As part of Record Store Day and its many offerings, they have released the single “Starryeyed,” a haunting, ethereal and deeply moving effort that finds the band in perfect form. Evoking shades of Joni Mitchell, vocalist Tonya Donnelly’s vocals are inward, intimate and quite thought- provoking. The exclusive track is featured on Belly’s Record Store Day EP “Feel” and is available on 10” vinyl. “Starryeyed” is paired alongside “Hushabye Mountain,” from the musical Chitty-Chitty Bang Bang, which just might be the coolest cover of the year. “Starryeyed” comes on the heels of the band’s first single “Shiny One.”

Belly’s first album since the Clinton presidency, Dove, is out May 4. The album was produced and recorded by bandmember Tom Gorman and longtime friend Paul Q. Kolderie (Hole, Throwing Muses, Radiohead) and if “Starry-Eyed” is any indication, it’s going to be well worth the investment.
