Five For The Weekend

Posted by Greg on May 4, 2018 in Music |

We’re not gonna hide it. We’re pretty darn stoked it’s finally May. Kentucky Derby this weekend, The Player’s Championship the weekend after, the Preakness and then the Indy 500. Not to mention NHL and NBA playoffs. But this is a music blog right? As is the custom here, we like to highlight five tracks to enhance your weekend. Head to the jump to see what’s been running for our roses. (Sorry, couldn’t help it).

1. Broken Baby – “Year of the Fat Man”
Alex Dezen, formerly of The Damnwells is ridiculously prolific. His latest project, Broken Baby, a collaboration with girlfriend/actress Amber Bollinger is a scuzzy, politically charged slice of garage-pop that’s quirky, borderline trippy and absolutely without pretense. In other words, it’s a perfect weekend song.

2. Joni – “Omens”
Now that it’s May, it must be raining somewhere. So why not find a song perfectly suited for rain fall? This week’s there’s no better song for melancholy than this languid, nocturnal sliver of dream-pop and its creator, a charming young chanteuse who goes by Joni. Her latest single “Omens” is enveloping, eerie and utterly addicting. Dive in. This is some sensual stuff.

3. Sonny Elliot – “Under Covers”
Sounding like a long-lost Neil Finn b-side, “Under Covers” is probably the best song we’ve heard this week and easily one of the best we’ve heard this year. Pensive, open-hearted and wildly seductive, this is a song that lingers long after the final listen. The single is also the title track for an EP due out May 25th. Remember the name, this UK duo is on the cusp of something truly powerful. Songs this gorgeous are certainly no fluke.

4. Birds of Chicago – “Never Go Back”
For all our devotion to Bloodshot Records, we’re probably equally as smitten with the New Hampshire-based Signature Sounds. After all, they’ve introduced us to the likes of Josh Ritter, Mark Erelli, Jeffrey Foucault, Lake Street Dive and hordes of others. Their latest signing might be one of their best to date. “Never Go Back” is the latest single from the duo Birds of Chicago, which drips with the playfulness of 1970s AOR and that ever engaging Laurel Canyon breeziness. If there’s a better way to start the weekend, we haven’t heard it.

5. The Underhill Family Orchestra – “Tell Me That You Love Me”
Feel like a little roots music? This hip-shaking, whiskey-swilling romp is as refreshing, effervescent and sun-drenched as first love. Quite frankly, this is the kind of song that makes one yearn for an open road, an open stage and your soul’s companion. Effortless, sweetly affecting and down-right irresistible, The Underhill Family Orchestra are that kind of band that makes you grateful to be alive.
